JDMIS Silver Jewellery Fabrication Certificate

Course Synopsis:

Metal Clay Silver and Gold provide previously unimagined potential for creativity to designers and artisans working with precious metals. Without the need for expensive casting machinery or tedious and repetitive manual metal-work techniques, this exciting material allows you to focus on your design goals instead of your tools. By combining an extremely fine metal powder with trace amounts of water and binders, a clay-like texture is achieved. This can be moulded in myriad ways before undergoing ‘firing’, where the material is heated at high temperature in order to burn off the water and binders, leaving 99.9% pure silver or 22 karat gold.

The Silver Jewellery Fabrication Certificate focuses on building the foundational skills needed for a wide variety of designer projects and covers the techniques and design considerations related to the use of the different types of metal clay.

Students learn unique modelling methods suitable for when the material is in its soft, clay form as well as many 'finishing' techniques to create brushed, polished, highly reflective or antiqued looks.

Course Project Work:

During this certificate participants create many pieces of jewellery using a variety of styles & techniques; examples include:

Beyond fundamental modelling and finishing techniques, designers working through the syllabus will gain experience with stone setting, secure attachment of fine silver and sterling silver components to their designs and the creation of hollow, lightweight silver pieces. As they progress through eight specialized learning-projects, new techniques are introduced and later reinforced to ensure clear understanding and technical capability. Upon completion students will be able to create high quality fine silver pendants, rings, earrings, brooches and other designer jewellery.
