JD101 Jewellery Design Fundamentals

This subject focuses on the transfer 3-dimensional ideas from your mind to a 2-dimensional medium such as paper. Students learn and practice basic drawing techniques including counter sketching, top, side and end view drawing and perspective drawing. Students learn the importance of accuracy and scale when designing jewellery with gemstones. This subject also covers a variety of presentation and rendering techniques can be used to bring designs to life.

JD102 Thread and Wire Jewellery Fabrication

One of the most common yet least recognized forms of jewellery in the market today are designs made using thread and wire. In this module, students learn the professional techniques used to create durable, quality jewellery using thread and wire. Students learn and perfect their skills in knotting with silk, polyester and hybrid threads and practice professional wire work techniques using hard & soft wire of various gauges as well as flexible steel wire. Beyond the techniques, students understand the selection criteria that are used to match techniques with appropriate gemstones, organic materials, minerals or man-made jewellery components.

JD103 Metal Clay Jewellery Fabrication

This module introduces students to the latest in precious metal fabrication technology: Metal Clay. Students learn the skills required to create pure silver jewellery such as rings, pendants, earrings and brooches by combining clay, paste and syringe material types and various gemstone setting techniques. Students learn traditional and non-traditional jewellery finishing techniques as well as important design considerations when working with these techniques.

JD104 Fundamentals of Gemology

No designer's education is complete without an understanding of the gemstones and precious metals they are working with. This largely theoretical course enables students to understand the origins and rarity of the precious elements used in jewellery. Students learn of gemstone classification systems and of the different valuation methods used with coloured gemstones, diamonds and pearls. Students learn about the properties of precious metals and understand many of the mass-fabrication methods employed in the industry.

JD105 History and Trends in Jewellery Design

This module covers the most significant periods in history that affected jewellery designs and the popularity of gemstones & precious metals. Students begin with the concept of jewellery in pre-history and how adornment styles have changed over time. By identifying patterns in jewellery over time, and the timeless aspects of design that persist throughout every major design period, students better understand the elements of today's designs and how they can take inspiration from the past. By exploring modern-day short-term fashion trends gain further insight into the design process.

JD201 Advanced Jewellery Design

This course covers advanced paper design technique designers use to convey subtle fabrication hints to the intended manufacturers. Designer also learn about how to design jewellery that is ideally suited to different mass-production techniques. Students also learn of the different Computer Aided Jewellery Design tools that are available in the market and the concepts and skills they need to master to transfer their paper-skills to computer.

JD202 Advanced Thread & Wire Designer Jewellery

Expanding upon the professional thread and wire techniques learned in JD102, students learn of the design principles and calculations involved in creating multiple-strand thread-based jewellery, and in using wire techniques to create their own customized findings, clasps and accessories. At the conclusion of JD102 and JD202 students have the skills and experience to create an exhaustive variety of designs using thread and wire.

JD203 Advanced and Multimedia Metal Clay Modelling

This module develops the knowledge and skills students working with Metal Clay require by incorporating learning projects that employ multiple media such as 22 karat gold, gold leaf and glass fusing. Students refine their jewellery finishing techniques, learn about the correct methods of incorporating fine silver and sterling silver findings and learn new stone-setting techniques to complete their repertoire of skills.

JD204
Jewellery Metal-smithing, Traditional & Contemporary Techniques

In this course students work with and gain an understanding of the many alternative metals available for use in jewellery. Students experience a variety of traditional techniques including Repoussé and Chasing, Drilling, Forging, Fusing and Soldering. Metal finishing techniques of various kinds will be covered. Discovery of other materials for incorporation into creative designs will be explored.
For graduates of other business-related programs and experienced members of the industry wishing to receive a formal tertiary-level accreditation, the JDMIS also offers an 8-module Post-graduate Diploma in Jewellery Design & Fabrication that comprises the design and fabrication modules taught in the ordinary diploma and advanced diploma courses.
